Two Sides of the Coin

Mental health is a subject that can carry many different meanings and experiences. Two Sides of the Coin is a show about the two sides of struggling with mental health: the extremely low days that make you a prisoner in your own body, and the smaller high moments where life becomes bearable. My sculpture series Two Sides of the Coin focuses on the conflicting elements of highs and lows, often pairing pieces together to show how these two seemingly different states of being are inextricably linked. After all, there cannot be highs without lows. My work is abstract, made out of steel, iron, bronze, and stone. I want the weight of the material to bring more emphasis to the story behind each piece, and after being cast, fabricated, or carved, I want those processes to show in the actual piece. Through these elements, the journey from raw material to the individual works of art aren’t overwritten or concealed, much like how we tend to conceal or overwrite the hardships of dealing with our own mental health. This work brings to the surface the hidden thoughts that many people have and continue to struggle with. The fabric seen in this show has been written upon by my own hand, as well as by others from the community at large. It is through their words and their experiences that this show is given weight.
