My practice is based on process. The processes of creation and inner reflection are the two key principles that my work is based off of.
The process of creation takes different forms in my work. Whether I am fabricating public artwork, pouring iron into wood, or individually wiring hundreds of thumbtacks together, the physical process of creating gives me a sense of accomplishment and joy. When I am in the process of designing a new piece, most of the time I only have an aesthetic goal in mind, with no real concept behind the work. It is only when I begin to create the piece that it tells me its story and what it wants to be.
The various processes I use to create my work give me time to reflect on my own understanding of my thoughts and emotions, using it as an outlet to better understand myself and my inner turmoil. The idea of “getting out of my shell” is a present concept, manifesting both physically in my work and mentally in my social anxiety. I try to manifest the struggle and triumph of breaking free from the confines of my self-imposed barriers. It’s only through this manifestation and reflection process that I begin to understand myself and understand my work.
